About Me

People say I'm:
-
Describe Yourself:Woman, mother, artist, writer, friend, liberal political activist, dog and animal lover, crazy about little kids, think people are mostly fascinating and good. What breaks my heart? Domestic violence, child abuse, exploitation of women and children around the world, cruel behavior towards each other, intolerance, racism, bigotry, misogyny, violence, evilness, untreated mental or physical illness.
-
On Gather, I'm Looking For ...:At first it was just validation for my writing efforts... but now I love to give it too! And although I never thought it would happen to me... after all who gets into social networks who has a real life I told myself... I really care about my Gather friends.
I feel like I have found the modern equivalent of pen pals. We can be really honest with each other and bare it all emotionally, spiritually or whatever moves us that day. We can create some fantasy and people are actually interested in each others' imaginations. This is SO rare in life.
The feedback is mostly positive (how often can we depend on that in our non-Gather lives?) and when it isn't? Defenders come to the fore and show us that we are never really isolated or alone on this site.

Hi Andrea, Yup, Captain Harry married my father's mom's sister... and they were OLD at the time. My great-grandfather was a sea captain (her dad), so it was a match made in heaven. My father adored him and regaled us with stories for years, and my cousin found and sent me an hard copy of his book. I know he was very upset at my great aunt when he lost his yawl on a trip with her. He wanted to outrun some weather thing and she insisted on going onshore and waiting it out. He had planned to give the yawl to the Smithsonian. Ah well, so much for the best-laid plans.:)
My brother carries on the family sailing/boating tradition, although he gets into enough trouble just on the Atlantic. From what my father said, Harry was a rather modest gentleman, but certainly epitomized that 'do-it-by-yourself' thing. I couldn't believe his book was part of that Mariners series that they keep reprinting, but I've met so many people who admire him. Many people don't realize he also was an amazing photographer and about 1500 of his plates are in a CA state university.

Elizabeth, I just read your comment about Barbary's book! How wonderful that you're related to one of my heroes, the great Harry Pidgeon, who wrote "Around the World Single-Handed"! Wow, one of THE great books about sailing. Although he died two years before I was born, he's every sailor's hero.

Have you been to the Rose Festival or Starlight Parade? There is also a marching band made up of OLD people. It is a larger group than the concert band I enjoyed today. It really is cool. They enjoyed it, but not as a career. Sure beats playing bridge or poker!
Happy 4th!
